Talk:Information Technology

As per the discussion which began in the comments on CrookedTimber, I think that there should set of finer-grained categories relation information and computer sciences. My own thinking would be two categories. The first category would be the current "Information Technology" category, left under "Professions and Arts," which would be home to blogs by IT professionals: software engineers, network administrators, etc. The second category would be "Computer Science," and would get all of the blogs by academic computer scientists -- this would include many of the blogs currently filed under IT.

Further, an argument could be made for (bear with me) _three_ categories, with the CS category above differentiated into "Computer Science" and "Information Sciences," where the former would include those who study traditional CS subjects such as algorithms, complexity, theory, and AI, and the latter would include those who study subjects such as the social aspect of computing, human/computer interaction, and the science of software engineering. anonymously agreed, that there is no computer science on the main page is pretty silly. information technology would insult a lot of the bloggers i know on here.

OK - given that no-one has raised any objection, I am creating a computer science category. This will eventually replace the Information Technology category, as IT professionals aren't academics as far as I know (if I'm wrong, let me know). Those blogs that aren't computer science but are currently listed under IT should be moved elsewhere - i.e. places like Media as appropriate. Once someone who can distinguish the one from the other has made these changes, I will delete the Information technology category. Henry 16:58, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

Sounds great to me. Is there any way we can get moved to Sciences, though? It is true that a lot of CS departments split off from Engineering departments, but as or more often there are closer associations with Mathematics departments. ToddJohnson 15:26, 21 October 2006 (EDT)

There are quite a number of academic and professional degree programs in information science and information technology at AAU and non-AAU universities. These are generally distinct from computer science in significant ways. This would argue against eliminating the "Information Technology" category. Perhaps we can keep both Information Technology and Computer Science for a time and discover how people self-select into each category?
